Sep 25 – Oct 3

The weather forecast for the week called for rain everyday, and it did rain for the first two days of travel, first to Atlanta to meet up with friends from Michigan and California, and then on to the beautiful island of Roatan. The weather in Roatan was incredible after all, with only bit of rain and wind our final day.

Our trip began with rain in Austin.

Cheers to vacations!Cheers to vacations!

I highly recommend a trip to this Caribbean island. Avoid the hotels and rent a house in West End. It is the only way to go. Trust me on this. West End has tons of great restaurants and bars where you can mix with the locals and hear all the local gossip. Avoid the the West End ATM though. It is skimmed. Someone from Ecuador has made off with a lot of tourist cash!

Water taxis are the way to get around the island, and Big John had all the local gossip.

We hired a boat for a day of fishing, then had the boat owner’s mom cook up our catch of tuna. We took a water taxi and spent a day on the soft, sandy beach of West Bay. The boys hired scooters and spent another day exploring the rest of the island (while I spent the day exploring the joy of doing nothing at all). The island is probably best known for its reefs, and is incredibly popular with scuba divers, but diving equipment is not needed. Just bring your snorkeling gear and jump in. No matter where you swim, the reef is right there. Amazing underwater views from every angle.
